Reninghelst Churchyard

Reningelst cemetery and the 'Extension' were used from March 1915 until the 'New Military Cemetery' was commissioned in November 1915. Half the dead buried on the 'Extension' died at Hill 60 in Zillebeke after the German troops' attempt to retake the artificial hill with chlorine gas on 1 May 1915. The 5th Division of the British Army held out, but more than 300 soldiers had to be transferred with gas poisoning to one of the 'Field Ambulances' behind the front.
